What This Is

You decorate spaces for Jamaican family celebrations. You arrive 90 minutes before the event, assemble your pipe-and-drape backdrop, build balloon pillars and garlands, position uplights, photograph the result, collect the balance payment, and leave. After the event you return to dismantle. Revenue is per booking — each event is a separate transaction, not a recurring retainer.

What You Need

  • Electric dual-nozzle balloon pump — J$8,000–J$12,000. Non-negotiable. Hand-pumping 50–100 balloons per event is physically exhausting and unprofessionally slow. Purchase before your first portfolio setup.
  • Pipe-and-drape frame (8×8ft adjustable) — J$15,000–J$25,000. This is the backbone of every backdrop. Available through event supply stores in Kingston and Montego Bay, and via Shopee Jamaica.
  • Fabric library — white, black, gold, and one sequin panel (baby pink, rose gold, or champagne). Start with 3 panels: white base, black base, and one sequin accent. Cost: J$8,000–J$15,000 total.
  • LED uplights (battery-powered, set of 4) — J$20,000–J$30,000. Battery-powered preferred over USB-powered for venue flexibility. These transform a plain white backdrop into a professional-looking setup.
  • B-Kit (consumable toolkit) — balloon strip tape, glue dots, monofilament, command hooks, clamps, heavy-duty scissors, cable ties. Cost: J$2,000–J$3,500 to stock initially.
  • Hi-Float balloon treatment — J$2,000–J$3,500 per bottle. Extends latex balloon life significantly in Jamaican heat and humidity. Available through party supply wholesalers in Kingston.
  • Latex balloons in standard event colours — white, gold, black, pink, blue, and two neutrals. Start with 5 bags of 100 (J$4,000–J$6,000). Restock per event.
  • Reliable vehicle access — SUV, wagon, or hatchback with foldable seats. If you do not own one, establish a transport partner arrangement before accepting bookings. Per-event van hire: J$4,000–J$8,000 — factor this into every quote.
  • WiPay merchant account (wipaycaribbean.com/jamaica) — for deposit collection. A personal savings account (NCB, BNS, CIBC FirstCaribbean, or Sagicor) satisfies the sole trader requirement. Fee: 1.5% per transaction.

First 7 Actions

  1. 1Day 1–2 — Source and purchase core equipment. Visit event supply stores in your parish capital or Kingston wholesale district. Buy: electric balloon pump, pipe-and-drape frame (8×8ft), 3 fabric panels (white, black, one sequin), Hi-Float treatment, B-Kit basics. If ordering online, initiate orders on Day 1 — delivery from Kingston via Knutsford Express takes 2–3 days. Output: purchase receipts saved, equipment delivery confirmed or in hand.
  2. 2Day 3–4 — Practice your core skills. Build a 6ft balloon pillar until you can complete it in under 15 minutes. Build a 3ft organic balloon garland. Assemble and disassemble your pipe-and-drape frame twice. If you haven't completed the Before You Start pre-pack phase, do it now before proceeding. Output: pillar built in under 15 minutes, garland built in under 20 minutes.
  3. 3Day 5 — Set your prices and write your packages menu. The Birthday Pop (2 pillars + banner): J$15,000. The Full Backdrop (backdrop + garland + uplights): J$25,000. The Garden Gala (Full Backdrop + 2 tables): J$35,000. Add travel fee tiers. Save as a PDF in Google Drive. Screenshot the first page for WhatsApp. Output: packages menu PDF ready.
  4. 4Day 6 — Build and photograph your portfolio setup. Set up a complete Full Backdrop in your home or a clean outdoor space: frame assembled, fabric draped, balloon garland attached, uplights positioned. Use natural window light or shoot during golden hour (5–6pm). Take 10 photos. Select the best 3 — these are your portfolio. If the photos are not strong enough to post on Instagram, redo the setup. Output: 3 portfolio photos saved and posted to Instagram.
  5. 5Day 7 — Set up WhatsApp Business and submit WiPay application. WhatsApp Business: profile photo (your best portfolio setup photo), business description (service area, packages available, deposit required), 4 Quick Replies (pricing, booking, availability, post-event). WiPay: go to wipaycaribbean.com/jamaica, submit with personal bank account details. Approval: 1–3 business days. Output: WhatsApp Business active, WiPay applied.
  6. 6Day 8 — Begin first-week outreach. Three channels simultaneously: (1) Post your portfolio photo on Instagram with caption: '[Parish]. Birthday / graduation / baby shower decoration. From J$15,000. DM to book. 🇯🇲' (2) Send personal WhatsApp message to 10 contacts: 'I just launched my decoration business. Here's one of my setups [send photo]. If you or anyone you know has a celebration coming up, I'd love to help.' (3) Join 2 local community Facebook or WhatsApp groups and post your portfolio with package prices. Output: post published, 10 DMs sent, 2 community group posts live.
  7. 7Day 9–14 — Follow up and confirm first booking. Respond to all inquiries within 2 hours. For every serious inquiry: send the Event Brief Form (Google Form link) → review brief → send quote with travel fee if applicable → send WiPay deposit link for 50% → confirm only after deposit clears. If no inquiry by Day 10: send 10 more personal DMs and offer the one-time community giveaway (decorate one podium or entrance at a local church or school event for free in exchange for visible display of your business card and permission to photograph). Output: first booking confirmed with deposit, or community giveaway arranged.

Waiting-Time Tasks

Things to do while waiting for supplies, responses, or between clients:

  • While waiting for equipment to arrive: create your Google Form Event Brief. Questions: event type, date, start time, venue address, indoor/outdoor, guest count, colour scheme, package preference, venue restrictions, power outlet availability. Save the shareable link as a WhatsApp Quick Reply. Output: Event Brief Form live and link saved.
  • While waiting for your first inquiry to convert to a booking: build your Colour Palette Reference. Create a Google Doc with 6 standard event colour schemes (black + gold, white + pink, blue + gold, all-white, tropical brights, graduation black + school colour). For each scheme: list the balloon colours needed, the fabric combination, and 3 reference Instagram photos. This becomes your consultation tool — when a client says 'I want something elegant,' you send them the black + gold palette option. Output: Colour Palette Reference doc with 6 schemes.
  • While waiting for WiPay approval: find your 2 nearest party supply wholesalers. Confirm their opening hours, whether they offer bulk discounts (usually 10–15% on orders over J$5,000), and how quickly they can fulfil a last-minute order. Save their WhatsApp numbers. Output: 2 wholesalers confirmed with contact details and bulk terms.
  • While waiting between bookings: practice one new technique per week. Week 1: organic balloon arch. Week 2: bubble balloon arrangement. Week 3: balloon mosaic letter or number. Search YouTube: 'organic balloon arch tutorial Jamaica' or 'balloon mosaic DIY tutorial.' Each new technique becomes a new add-on or portfolio piece. Output: one new technique practiced and photographed.
  • While building your first client base: approach 2 home bakers in your area. Introduce yourself: 'I'm a decorator serving [parish]. When someone orders a celebration cake from you, I'd love if you could mention that I handle the decoration side. I'll do the same — when clients ask about cake, I'll send them to you.' This referral partnership costs nothing and generates mutual leads consistently. Output: 2 baker partnerships established.

Value-Add Menu

Additional services to increase revenue per customer:

  • [From first booking] Rush booking surcharge — +J$5,000 for any booking confirmed within 72 hours of the event. You are rearranging your schedule and sourcing materials at short notice. The surcharge reflects that reality.
  • [From first booking] Extra balloon pillar — +J$3,500 per additional pillar. Most Birthday Pop clients want a third pillar once they see the quote. Price it clearly so the upgrade is easy.
  • [Phase 1 — after 5 events] LED number or letter sign — +J$2,500. Rentable prop. Numbers (16, 21, 30, 40, 50) and letters (initials, HAPPY, GRAD) photograph beautifully and clients request them consistently. Purchase 1–2 sets once you have steady bookings.
  • [Phase 1 — after 5 events] Balloon arch (freestanding, 6ft) — +J$8,000. Requires a balloon arch stand (J$5,000–J$8,000 one-time purchase). Arches are the most-requested upgrade from Full Backdrop clients.
  • [Phase 2 — after 15 events] Gift vouchers — sell decoration vouchers for J$5,000, J$10,000, or J$15,000. People buy them as gifts for friends' baby showers and birthdays. Pre-paid income with no commitment to a specific date until the recipient books.

Sales Mode

Three channels that consistently generate decoration bookings in Jamaica. Channel 1 — Community proximity: Be the known decorator for your immediate area. Post your setups to WhatsApp Status every Saturday with 'Booking [month] now' text. Neighbours who see Saturday setups on WhatsApp Status book before they search Instagram. The 'scheme champion' strategy from the canon works: offer no travel fee within 1 mile of your base, make your name synonymous with that neighbourhood. Channel 2 — Referral partnerships: Find the 2 most popular home bakers in your parish. When they bake a celebration cake, they can say 'Need someone for decoration?' and send them to you. When you decorate, you can say 'I know a great baker for the cake.' These partnerships generate warm leads with zero marketing spend. Do the same with a photographer if one operates in your area. Channel 3 — Community event giveaway: Offer to decorate one entrance, podium, or table at a church event, school graduation, or community fair at no charge. Your business card sits visibly in the setup. Every person at that event sees your work. The condition: you photograph the setup and post it with your branding. One well-attended community event can generate 3–5 bookings from attendees. Closing sequence: Inquiry → Event Brief Form sent → brief reviewed → quote sent with travel fee → WiPay deposit link for 50% → confirm after deposit clears → pre-event planning call or WhatsApp → setup day → collect balance before setup begins → photograph → post-event follow-up.

Daily Minimum Target

This is a weekend-volume business. Most events happen on Saturdays. The right frame is: how many Saturdays this month are confirmed bookings? Month 1 — target 1–2 bookings. Realistic income: J$15,000–J$50,000 gross. After costs (materials J$3,500–J$6,500 per event, transport J$2,000–J$5,000 per event): net J$8,000–J$35,000. This month is about getting clean portfolio photos and your first 3 reviews. Month 2–3 — target 3–4 bookings per month. Mix of packages: 2 Birthday Pops + 1 Full Backdrop + 1 Garden Gala = J$90,000 gross. After costs (materials + transport + occasional assistant): net J$55,000–J$70,000. Month 4+ — 4–5 bookings per month is comfortable solo capacity. At J$25,000 average per booking × 5 = J$125,000 gross. Net after costs: J$80,000–J$95,000. Beyond this, you need a weekend assistant to handle two simultaneous setups or sequential same-day bookings. Daily activity minimum when building the roster: post 1 piece of content (setup photo, before/after, or balloon tip video) + respond to all inquiries within 2 hours + follow up on any pending quote that is 48+ hours old without a deposit.

Common Failure Points

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Accepting a booking before the equipment is purchased — a client who pays a deposit for an event 3 weeks away expects you to show up with professional equipment. If the pump breaks, the frame is incomplete, or the fabric is the wrong colour, that is your problem to solve before event day, not an excuse to offer on the day
  • No vehicle plan for event day — discovering on the morning of an event that your transport arrangement fell through is a business-ending moment. Confirm transport 48 hours before every event, not on the morning of
  • Underquoting to win the booking — a J$12,000 Birthday Pop that costs J$8,000 in materials, transport, and labour is not a win. Every booking below your minimum margin floor trains clients to expect low prices and trains you to work for less than your time is worth. Price correctly from the first booking
  • No deposit, no confirmation — a client who says 'I'll send it tomorrow' and then goes quiet has not booked. You have had a conversation. Do not turn away other inquiries for an undeposited date
  • Skipping the portfolio setup before first outreach — reaching out to potential clients before you have a strong portfolio photo is a structural mistake. The first thing every client does after your first WhatsApp message is look at your Instagram. An empty or low-quality Instagram means no conversion, regardless of how good your pitch is
  • Not accounting for strike time in your schedule — a 2-hour setup has a 45-minute strike. If you have two events on the same Saturday, the strike of the first event must complete before you can start the setup of the second. Bookings without travel and strike time factored in will cause you to be late to the second event

Exit / Expand Paths

Where this business can take you:

  • Expand: Prop rental — rent your pipe-and-drape frames, uplights, and backdrop panels to DIY decorators for J$5,000–J$10,000 per weekend. Equipment you already own generates income when you are not using it. Require a J$10,000 damage deposit and a signed rental agreement.
  • Expand: Corporate and school events — company family days, school speech days, and prize-giving ceremonies have larger budgets than household celebrations (J$80,000–J$200,000 per event) and longer planning windows. Pitch directly to HR managers and school principals. Require a 30% non-refundable deposit for corporate bookings.
  • Expand: Balloon workshops — after 6 months and 20+ events, you have enough skill and portfolio to teach. Charge J$5,000–J$8,000 per person for a 3-hour hands-on workshop: organic garland, balloon pillar, basic styling. Host in your home or a community centre. Maximum 8 participants.
  • Expand: Full event styling — invest in professional lighting, custom furniture rentals, and floral accents to move from 'decoration' into the higher-fee 'event styling' market. Styling packages start at J$80,000. This requires additional capital (J$200,000+) and a more sophisticated client base.
  • Next pack: pp-052 (Social Media Content Creation) — decoration businesses live and die by their Instagram. pp-052 teaches how to turn your setup photos into a content system that books clients consistently without paid ads.
